You expect a lot from your swimwear. From water sports to sitting in gritty sand, your suit has a tough job and has to look cute while doing it.
If you spend a lot of time in a pool, you’re already aware of the fact that chlorine hasn’t been the best friend to your suit. Chlorine, paired up with all those damaging UV rays, may want to make you sit on your couch, instead of the beach.
There are ways to care for your suit, and actually wear it outside. When you wash your suit, choose a gentle detergent. The chemicals in many detergents not only damage your suit, they’re damaging to your skin. Some of the ingredients in laundry detergent can actually eat away at the fabric of your swimwear. No thank you! To avoid this, choose a detergent designed specifically for delicate fabric. There are also some made especially for swimwear.
While it’s necessary to wash your suit, there is no reason good enough to put it in the dryer. Sorry last-minute pool party, you’re going to have to wait for the natural-dry. Dryer heat eventually fades the color of your suit, and also causes it to lose its shape. Instead of chucking the poor thing into the dryer, lay it out on a flat surface to preserve both the color and the shape.
Pool parties can have you sitting on all kinds of rough surfaces. You need to be aware of where you put your derriere! Sitting on rough cement, or wood surfaces will cause pilling and snags in a jiffy. If you must sit there, put a beach towel down first, to protect the fabric as much as possible.
You’ve heard it before: rinse and repeat. If you want to keep wearing that suit, you’ll need to wash away the sins of the salt, chlorine, and sand. Use a delicate detergent, and rinse your suit in cold water, every time you wear it. Yes,everytime. You’ll want to do everything you can to prolong the life of your swimwear.
You’ve invested a lot of time and money in finding a swimsuit that you love. Just finding one that fits right, can be a challenge for some. Instead of sacrificing the color or shape of that cherished little garment, use a little TLC instead. A little love goes a long way.
