You spent all that time choosing the best swimsuit for you. Hours on fit, style, and color. You’ve even matched your beach towel to your beloved suit. After all that effort, you need to know how to keep your suit looking fresh and new.
You’ve probably already experienced the horrid effects that chlorine can have on your swimsuit. That, coupled with the damaging effects of the sun, might make you want to only wear your suit in the bathtub. No need. There are a few things you can do to get out of the tub, and into the sun, while still protecting your suit.
When you wash your swimsuit, be sure to use gentle detergents. Not only can the harsh chemicals in some detergents harm your skin, but they can also destroy a swimsuit. Some chemicals can even eat away fabric, which then leads to funky shapes and no elasticity. No thank you. Instead, try hand-washing with a laundry detergent that is specifically designed for delicates. There are even some that are made just for swimwear. A little laundry-love can go a long way.
Once you’ve given your suit a bath, be sure to keep it out of the dryer. The heat from a dryer can cause fading, and once again, loss-of-shape. Instead of throwing it in the dryer, lay your suit out to dry on a flat surface. This way, it keeps its shapeandcolor!
Of course, you’ll probably want to hang out poolside at some point, but take note of exactly where you sit. Many pool decks are made of rough cement or wood that can quickly ruin your suit. Pilling, fuzzy balls, and snags are a few of the things you can look forward to when you sit your behind on these no-go surfaces. If you must sit on the deck, place a towel down first, to offer a bit of a barrier for your bum.
Once we had our full day of sun-and-fun-and-protected-bums, it’s time to rinse and repeat! Well, at least rinse. Grab that swimsuit detergent you purchased right after you read paragraph three, and get to soaping! Use cold water to gently remove saltwater, or chlorine-based chemicals from your suit prolong the color, shape, and life of your dear friend. You will be rewarded with years of wear, and (goodclean) fun.
